Toronto: The restaurant industry in Ontario is thriving, as are the trades and agriculture, but healthcare remains the most in-demand sector in the province as the year comes to a close. This article describes, the list of the top 10 most wanted jobs in Canada

The province of Ontario now has such a dire need for skilled workers that its Immigration Minister, Monte McNaughton, has asked Ottawa to double the number of these workers who can settle in the province.

“I’ve asked the federal government to increase the number of skilled newcomers Ontario can accept,” Immigration Minister Monte McNaughton tweeted. “We’re facing an unprecedented labour deficit,”

He wrote, “Our government wants to construct a better, stronger Ontario – but we need your cooperation to do it.”

Based on the criteria of the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program, here are the Top 10 Most wanted Jobs in Canada (Ontario), organised by job title and National Occupational Classification (NOC) code.

1. Patient Service Associates, Nurse Aides, and Orderlies (NOC 3413)

There were 126 nurse aide positions available in Ontario alone in mid-November, with a total of 885 available across the country. In Ontario, these positions pay an average annual salary of $40,300 based on a 37.5-hour work week, but pay can be as high as $60,450 depending on experience and location.

There are the individuals who assist nurses, hospital staff, and physicians in providing basic patient care in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities for the elderly, and other healthcare facilities.

2. Home Support Workers and Related Occupations (Except Housekeepers) (NOC 4412)

Home support workers are people who provide personal care and companionship for seniors, people with disabilities, and convalescent clients. These are another set of most wanted jobs in Canada that can be undertaken by any healthy individual. They usually provide care in the client’s home and often live there as well. They can also work for home care and support agencies or as independent contractors.

In mid-November, there were 1,093 similar positions advertised on Job Bank across Canada, with around one-third of these, or 393 positions, situated in the province of Ontario. In Ontario, the position pays an average annual salary of around $35,100, with more experienced workers earning up to $57,600.

3. Residential & Commercial Installers & Service Providers (NOC 7441)

The 71 residential and commercial installers and servicers jobs listed on Job Bank vastly understate the tremendous demand for such workers, many of whom are snatched up by contractors before the jobs are ever posted anywhere.

In mid-November, Indeed.ca listed 327 siding installer jobs in Ontario alone. On the same website, there were another 212 openings for door installers. Hence we can easily say that these jobs are the most wanted jobs in Canada.

These are the people who put products and systems in your home or business. Residential, commercial, and institutional properties can all have windows, doors, electrical appliances, water heaters, fences, play structures, and septic and irrigation systems.

In Ontario, the average yearly wage for these individuals is $40,950, although they can earn up to $73,125 for working conventional work weeks.

4. Drivers of Transport Trucks (NOC 7511)

In mid-November, Indeed.ca had over 7,500 help wanted ads for drivers in Canada, indicating a severe labour shortage. Job Bank.ca rates the chances of finding work in this occupational category as “good,” the highest rating.

On a 37.5-hour week, a truck driver in Canada may expect to earn $42,900 per year, although many truckers work longer hours and earn more making it one of the most wanted job in Canada. In British Columbia, these workers can earn up to $74,200 at the top of the pay scale.

5. Heavy Equipment Operators (With the exception of Cranes) (NOC 7521)

Heavy equipment operators are in high demand for work on highways, bridges, airports, gas and oil pipelines, tunnels, buildings, and other constructions, as well as material handling.

In mid-November, Job Bank had more than 300 such openings. Indeed.ca had nearly 2,200 listings. Thus Heavy Equipment Operator jobs are one of the most wanted job in Canada.

These workers earn a median annual salary of $54,405 based on a standard work week and are employed by construction companies, heavy equipment contractors, public works departments, pipeline, logging, cargo-handling, and other companies. They can earn up to $75,075 per week for the same 37.5 hours per week.

6. Construction Trades Assistants and Laborers (NOC 7611)

Those who own a good pair of construction boots and have some experience in the construction or mining industries will find it difficult to find work as a construction trade helper or labourer.

In mid-November, Job Bank had over 1,400 such openings, with 255 of them in Ontario.

On building sites, quarries, and surface mines, these individuals assist and do labouring jobs. Construction companies, trade and labour contractors, and surface mine and quarry operators employ them.

Based on a 37.5-hour work week, these employees can expect to earn $40,950 in Ontario, with top earners earning $70,200 per year.

7. Farm and Harvesting Employees (NOCs 8431 and 8611)

Despite the fact that farm work is heavily seasonal, Canadian farms are always looking for good workers, especially during harvest season. The outlook for farm work is rated “good” by Job Bank, which is its highest rating.

According to Job Bank, “Ontario has the most farms in the country, accounting for almost a quarter of all Canadian farms.”  “Because the province contributes so much to national crop and livestock production, there is always a need for these personnel, especially during peak farming seasons when crops must be processed rapidly to avoid losses.”

Based on a standard work week and year-round employment, farm hands in Ontario earn a median annual wage of $32,175 per year. Upper wage earners in some parts of the province can earn up to $62,400 per year.

8. Industrial Butchers and Meat Cutters, Poultry Preparers, and Other Workers (NOC 9462)

These are the people who skin, clean, and trim carcasses, cut beef, lamb, pork, or veal carcasses or sides or quarters of carcasses into prime cuts for further cutting, processing, or packaging, and remove bones from meat.

According to Ottawa, the recent labour shortage in this occupational group is expected to last at least another six years.

Ontario’s median yearly wage for these professionals is $35,100, but it can reach $54,600 in the Toronto region.

9. Mineral and metal processing machine operators (NOC 9411)

Mining companies are looking for most wanted jobs in Canada such as machine operators, with nearly 2,000 jobs listed on Indeed.ca as of mid-November.

They set up, prepare, and adjust mineral ore, metal, and cement processing machinery to perform metal processing steps, operate machines to grind, separate, filter, mix, treat, cast, roll, or refine ore, and assist with machinery maintenance or repair.

That equates to a median annual income of $46,800 in Ontario. Top earners can earn up to $77,766 per year if they work full-time for a standard 37.5-hour work week.

10. Industrial Painters, Coaters, and Operators of Metal Finishing Processes (NOC 9536)

These employees run and maintain machines or apply paint, enamel, lacquer, or other nonmetallic protective and decorative coatings to a variety of product surfaces using brushes and spray equipment.

Their fortunes are often inextricably linked to the fortunes of Ontario’s auto industry, where many of them work in most wanted jobs like these.

In Ontario, these employees make a typical annual pay of $40,000 for full-time employment and can earn up to $64,300 in some places.
