Brampton: Whether guiding people with a steady hand or rising up against injustice, a true leader always offers a glimpse of how to make progress under difficult circumstances. A remarkable female representative holding such calibre is Kamal Khera, the Brampton West MP.

After proving her lead in the 2021 Federal Elections in September Kamal Khera, the Brampton West MP, has been appointed as the Minister of Seniors now. Kamal Khera was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Brampton West in 2015. Formerly, Kamal also served as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministers of National Development and Revenue.

Kamal is a first-generation Canadian who immigrated to Canada from Delhi, India, when she was very young. But even as a child, her drive to serve humanity and her compelling desire to help others was apparent. Wanting to make a difference in the lives of people, Kamal took up a degree in Nursing and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She also served as a community volunteer and a political activist, advocating a better future for the people residing in Brampton West. To widen her scope to extend a helping hand to people in need, Kamal equipped herself with honours degrees in both psychology and nursing from the York University.

Kamal hails from an elite and a very supportive family background. Her parents stood by her as bricks and encouraged her in every step ahead. Her father, Harminder Singh served the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and her mother, Gursharan was a teacher. Kamal’s brother happens to be a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Collectively, the entire family in their own ways have shaped Kamal to bring changes in Brampton West.

After completion of her degree, Kamal worked at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), Peel Family Shelter, and William Osler Health Centre. It was during her tenure here, she gained a wide range of healthcare experience. Kamal currently works as a Registered Nurse in the Oncology Unit of St Joseph’s Health Centre at Toronto. Her hands-on interactions with patients and people in need offer her a thorough understanding of the issues that people face on a daily basis.

After having been a beacon of hope to several masses in Bramptom West, Kamal Khera is planning on settling down in her personal life. She intends to marry her longtime boyfriend-turned-fiance, Jaspreet Dhillon in the near future. The couple together have a similar mindset to reach out with open minds to the voices of people in need. Now, the couple have been preoccupied with wedding preparations and planning, but very soon they will be back into their mission of touching lives.

Khera’s future husband, Jaspreet, is a sports contributor and an analyst for Leafs Nation Network. He has also been a long-time supporter of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. He recently tweeted photos of himself and his nephew wearing Maple Leaf’s jerseys. These two people in the spotlight getting hitched will surely be an excitement to their supporters and fans.

However, winds of change might toss life; Kamal is determined to be an active member of her community. In the yesteryears, she was a Chairperson of the South Asian Canadians Heritage Foundation. She was also a Mentor and a Program Coordinator of Big Brothers & Big Sisters at Peel District and an Event Coordinator for the Sick Kid’s Foundation. She has also hosted the ‘Youth Vision,’ a local TV talk show that focuses on issues affecting the young South Asian Canadians.

Kamal is focused and inspired to make a better present and bright future for the residents of Brampton West because she truly believes that diversity is strength. Her heart always goes out to the thriving middle class dwellers in the area. She is committed to create safer communities for them and equitable healthcare facilities. She strongly believes in empowering the youth and making the surroundings greener and cleaner for a peaceful tomorrow.
