A Canadian study visa is valid for the student for the time they are studying plus a surplus of 90 days.

The extra 90 days are provided for the students to prepare for leaving Canada. But what if you need to study furthermore staying in Canada? In that case, you will have to extend your visa to Canada.

You will have to apply for an extension of your study visa. Make sure that your passport is still current and won’t expire before your study permit does before applying to extend it.

When to apply

Apply for a study permit extension at least 3 to 4 months before your study permit expires if you want to keep studying in Canada.

Documents Required

If you are applying online:

  1. Log into MyCIC on the IRCC website.
  2. Submit the questionnaire to get a list of application forms and necessary paperwork.
  3. After responding to the questionnaire, a screen titled “Your document checklist” will be presented to you.

The documents required are:

  • Passport Size Photograph 
  • Passport: When applying for the application, you must have a passport that will be valid for six months. At least two blank pages ought to be present. The first four pages and the endorsement for the extension of validity must be included in the attached passport copy.
  • Proof of acceptance: You must get a letter of acceptance from your school. With your application for a study permit, conclude your letter in its original form or an e-copy.

  • Optional Documents 
    • Obtain a firm offer of a spot in a course from a certified student sponsor.
    • for your new course of study, get a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).
    • You need to fulfil the ‘Academic progress requirement’. The requirements are:
      • Evidence of a higher academic level than the course you have just finished or;
      • A course of the same level that you completed but should be relevant to that course or the career you have to opt for or;
      • A part of the medicine, dentistry, or medical science course that you took while on your current student visa.
